FrSky Tandem X20S — Dual-Band 2.4GHz + 900MHz Transmitter

The FrSky Tandem X20S is the flagship of the X20 family — a full-size transmitter built around FrSky's Tandem (TD) dual-band system that runs 2.4GHz and 900MHz simultaneously, not as a failover. The result is a radio link that combines the low-latency responsiveness of 2.4GHz with the long-range penetration of 900MHz, FrSky rates the system at up to 50–100 km range and 4 ms latency under optimal conditions.

Hardware & Design

The X20S is built around high-precision Hall sensor gimbals (10 ball-bearings, 45°/60° adjustable travel, 8° rotatable panel), an 800×480 color touch screen, and CNC metal trims and knobs throughout. Weight stays under 1,000g. Six front custom buttons and two rear momentary buttons give you fast flight-mode switching without taking your fingers off the sticks.

TD Dual-Band RF System

The built-in TD module supports four operating modes: 2.4G ACCST D16, 2.4G ACCESS, 900M ACCESS, and 2.4G+900M TD simultaneous dual-band. The lite module bay in the rear accepts external modules (R9M Lite, XJT Lite, ELRS modules).

ETHOS Operating System

ETHOS is FrSky's purpose-built OS — touch and non-touch interface modes, LUA scripting, multi-language support, and wireless training (PARA system, FreeLink App 3.0). Built-in Bluetooth audio and haptic vibration alerts complete the package.

Why We Recommend the X20S

The X20S is our pick for serious fixed-wing and FPV pilots who want the full X20 platform — Hall gimbals, dual-band TD, ETHOS, and the Lite external module bay for adding ELRS or legacy modules — in one radio. If you're running a complex fixed-wing build with TD receivers and ADV sensors, the X20S is the transmitter the whole system is optimized around. FPV Builds RC provides U.S.-based product support, transmitter-setup assistance, and ETHOS configuration guidance for FrSky radios purchased through our store.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Which receivers are compatible with the X20S?

The X20S works with TD dual-band receivers (TDR10, TDR12, TD SR10, TD SR12, TD SR18, TD R6, TD SR6, TD MX), ACCESS receivers (Archer Plus series), and ACCST D16 receivers. Browse the full lineup at https://www.fpvbuildsrc.com/frsky-receivers

What is the difference between the X20S and the X20RS?

Both run ETHOS and Hall gimbals. The X20RS adds the RS internal module which enables 900MHz RS mode for extended long-range beyond standard Tandem TD. The X20S uses the standard TD module. If maximum 900MHz range is your priority, the X20RS is the step up. See our full transmitter range at https://www.fpvbuildsrc.com/frsky-transmitters

Can I use an ELRS module with the X20S?

Yes. The X20S has a rear Lite-format external module bay. Any Lite-sized ELRS module (such as the BetaFPV ELRS Lite or Happymodel ES24TX Lite) slots in directly. Bind your ELRS receivers through the external module just as you would on any radio with a module bay.

How do I update X20S firmware?

ETHOS firmware updates can be applied via USB (Type-C) from the FrSky ETHOS suite software, or downloaded directly to an SD card and installed on the radio. Receiver firmware is updated over-the-air from the transmitter without a computer once the radio firmware is current.

Does the X20S work with the CNC Metal Tray and Shoulder Strap?

Yes. The FrSky CNC Metal Tray is compatible with X20, X20S, and X18 series transmitters and supports neck strap attachment. The Transmitter Shoulder Strap works with the tray. Find them at https://www.fpvbuildsrc.com/product-page/frsky-cnc-metal-tray-for-tandem-x20-x20s-x18-series

What is the TD Tandem dual-band system?

TD runs 900MHz and 2.4GHz simultaneously — both frequencies are live at the same time, not failover. 2.4GHz gives fast 4ms latency; 900MHz extends range and cuts through interference. You get the benefit of both on every flight, not one or the other depending on signal conditions.

Does the X20S fit in the X20 Pro Aluminum Box?

The X20 Pro Aluminum Box is sized for the X20 Pro and X20 Pro AW. The X20S has slightly different dimensions and is not guaranteed to fit. Check the product dimensions against the box interior before purchasing if this is your use case.

Does FPV Builds RC offer setup help for the X20S?

Yes. We're a U.S.-based FrSky dealer and can help with binding, ETHOS configuration, receiver-selection, and tray/strap setup. Browse our full FrSky receiver range for pairing options at https://www.fpvbuildsrc.com/frsky-receivers
